Swallowing: a major problem for older adults

Today I want to share methods for caring for elderly people and patients with swallowing difficulties, based on over ten years of firsthand experience.

Food should be served only when the elderly person is conscious and alert.

Always have them drink water and eat while in a sitting position.

Do not let them watch TV or have other distractions while eating.

Provide foods that are easy to chew and swallow, with mild seasoning; you may cut food into small pieces or blend it until it becomes thick in texture.

Do not feed food in pieces that are too large.

Before feeding the next bite, make sure you have swallowed the previous bite by observing that the Adam’s apple has risen.

After finishing a meal, do not lie down immediately. You should sit and rest for about 15–30 minutes to reduce the risk of acid reflux.

Maintain good oral and dental hygiene at all times, especially after every meal. Check whether any food residue remains. For patients who cannot brush their teeth or rinse their mouth, they may drink small sips of water several times to help clean the mouth.

I’d like everyone to keep an eye out: if you start becoming drowsy, seem to have less energy, eat less, have a fever, and cough, it’s possible your body has an infection. Don’t ignore it—see a doctor immediately, because if left untreated it may lead to a lung infection and pneumonia.

Or if you are able to eat less and your body weight decreases, it may indicate malnutrition. You should supplement with medical nutrition as well, because malnutrition can also make you more susceptible to infections.

Wishing all fathers and mothers good health.
