How to calculate water intake for older adults

How much water should you drink each day? Many people would probably answer 6–8 glasses a day. But most older adults often don’t drink enough water each day, which affects how the body functions—for example, causing dehydration, affecting the circulatory system, making the kidneys work harder, constipation, and dry skin that loses elasticity. #Very dry skin can also itch, scratching until it becomes a wound, etc. A basic way to tell whether you’re drinking enough water is: dry lips and darker-colored urine.
For my dad, we calculate the amount of water he should get and then spread it evenly throughout the day until it reaches the calculated amount. This amount also includes the water contained in food.
The calculation method is:
1. First 10 kilograms of body weight x 100 milliliters = 1,000 milliliters
2. Next 10 kilograms of body weight x 50 milliliters = 500 milliliters
3. Remaining weight beyond the first 20 kilograms x 20 milliliters
4. Add the calculated numbers 1+2+3; this is the amount of water that should be received each day
Example calculation: body weight 50 kilograms. The calculated water amount is 1,000 + 500 + 600 = 2,100 milliliters per day
Right now Dad is consuming about 1,000 milliliters of food per day. The amount of water that needs to be added is about 1,100 milliliters per day
