Just moving counts as exercise: how to care for older adults

As we get older, our ability to move our bodies decreases. But if we don’t try to move, it will lead to even more problems, such as stiff joints and muscle wasting (muscles shrinking) until eventually we become weaker and weaker. You can probably picture it, right? Anything we don’t use for a long time becomes stiff and stuck; what used to work can end up becoming unusable.

Did you know that exercising by walking continuously for about 15 minutes after each of the three meals can help your heart work better, help control body weight, and also help manage blood sugar levels well? In addition, moving your body also helps stimulate bowel movements.

For moms and dads who can no longer take care of themselves, children and caregivers need to help move their bodies. Each day, you should schedule time for them to walk, possibly breaking it into short distances. They shouldn’t lie flat all day; have them sit in a chair with a backrest sometimes, or sit up on the bed without a backrest sometimes. Raising the arms and legs and gently rotating the joints—both wrists and ankles—will help prevent muscle wasting and joint stiffness. Every time you move their arms or legs, don’t forget to support the joint area with your hands as well.

Sending encouragement to all the children who have to take care of their moms and dads.
