Older adults and dehydration

ผู้สูงอายุกับภาวะขาดน้ำ

In extremely hot weather like this, one of the most important things to watch out for when caring for your parents is dehydration in older adults. Each day, if an elderly person doesn’t drink enough water, it can negatively affect their health, such as dry skin, dry mouth, dry eyes, constipation, and poor waste elimination. And if dehydration becomes severe, they may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion, fainting, or it could even be dangerous to the point of heart failure or kidney failure.

My dad used to have very dry skin and severe constipation, which started to affect his overall health. Once we had him drink more water—at least 8 glasses a day—the constipation began to improve. Try splitting it up to drink every hour or sip throughout the day. It may take effort, and you’ll need to be patient.

Regularly noticing these small things can help prevent other serious illnesses that may follow. Sending encouragement to all sons and daughters.
