Unveiling the secrets of 'dry skin'

Dry skin may seem like something ordinary, but in reality it’s not ordinary at all. If we leave our skin dry for a long time, it can have negative effects on the skin in the long term. Today, Piti dry skin expert would like to present the topic of dry skin.

How dry is considered dry skin?

This question is quite difficult to answer. Dry-skin symptoms may be just an individual feeling. When the skin is dry, we may feel discomfort, tightness, or there may be itching, flaking, peeling in sheets, or redness and irritation.

In medicine, “dry skin” is defined as a condition in which the water content in the outermost layer of the epidermis, or the stratum corneum, is less than 10%. This condition affects the function of the enzymes responsible for skin shedding by causing these enzymes to not work. Therefore, we see peeling skin, scaly skin, or flaking.

The next question is: how can we know how much water our skin has at that moment? The answer is that there are instruments to measure the water content in the skin. However, standardized instruments are quite expensive. In practice, if the skin shows peeling or flaking, it is classified as dry skin, because those symptoms occur when the skin-shedding enzymes cannot function due to too little water in the outermost layer of the epidermis.

Leaving your skin dry for a long time is definitely not good.
