Older adults and exercise

ผู้สูงอายุกับการออกกำลังกาย

Over the past 1–2 years, Mom has been falling much more often. It’s probably due to the increasing deterioration of her body and brain with age. In addition, she has been complaining of knee pain and has knee osteoarthritis, but we decided not to undergo knee replacement surgery. The doctor therefore recommended balance and gait training.

Before starting the program, the trainer asks about the training goals—what you want to achieve. For Mom, it’s strengthening the muscles around the knee, along with improving flexibility. If she can lose weight, that’s a bonus.

After starting the program for 2 weeks, you can really feel that Mom can move better. On the first day, it took 45 minutes to walk from home to the gym, a distance of about 650 meters. Now it takes only about 15–20 minutes—an obvious improvement.

Another advantage of using a trainer is that Mom cooperates with the trainer a lot. Whatever the trainer tells her to do, she does—super compliant like never before. These days, when I want Mom to do something, I’ll quietly ask the trainer to tell her for me. It’s a good strategy to indirectly help change behavior.

If anyone finds that when you tell your dad or mom to do something they tend to be stubborn or resistant, try finding someone they trust to speak to them instead. Many times it becomes much easier without us having to say it ourselves.

Cheering on all dutiful children.
