Dad is addicted to salty flavors — how to care for older adults

On the dining table there always had to be a bowl of light soy sauce set out like a dipping sauce every day. Several years ago, when Dad first started becoming forgetful, that little bowl of light soy sauce became a problem because he would keep pouring soy sauce—again and again—with no end in sight. We would remind him that he’d already added some, but he would say he hadn’t. If we tried to stop him from adding more, he wouldn’t agree. It was like this almost every day.

Until one day we thought, this really won’t do anymore. If this keeps going, he’ll probably end up with kidney disease on top of another illness for sure.

At first we tried solving it by cooking less salty food, but it didn’t help much because the soy sauce was still being topped up without restraint like before. So Mom suggested switching to dark soy sauce and adding water to dilute it until the color looked lighter, like light soy sauce. That helped reduce the saltiness a lot.

Just that was enough to reduce the clashes during meals by one more issue. Hope this trick is useful—try adapting it for your own use.
