Falls and older adults

Falls among the elderly are something many children worry about. Recently, Dad fell in the bathroom and split his head open. He has been in the hospital for 3 days now for observation. Even though someone was watching him almost every minute, accidents are unexpected. Earlier, Mom also fell while walking around sightseeing and enjoying nature—just tilting her face up to look at the sky, she fell and landed hard on her knees, even though I was standing nearby. A friend’s 70-year-old mother also fell at home because she sprayed water and the floor became wet… Things children can probably do include the following:
1. Install assistive devices in various spots to help them support themselves and change positions more easily, such as in the bathroom and bedroom.
2. If necessary, prepare a chair for sitting while bathing, because wet areas increase the risk of falling.
3. Ask them not to climb on chairs or go up to any high places, and offer to help handle tasks for them in every case so they won’t try to do it themselves.
4. In some cases, someone may need to be on hand to provide care 24 hours a day.
5. If frequent falls are related to other health issues, try taking him to consult a doctor as a preventive measure.
P.S. Dad will be discharged from the hospital this evening. The doctor advised monitoring his symptoms at home for about 1 month. If he becomes more lethargic, sleeps unusually much, cannot lift his arms/legs or lifts them unevenly, or vomits, see a doctor immediately.
