3 techniques to understand your father and mother

As our parents begin to grow older, we may sometimes forget that they are not the same as before—they don’t hear as well as they used to, don’t walk as fast as they used to, and aren’t as strong and healthy as they used to be. As their children, we need to learn to adjust ourselves to them. These simple ways may be able to help us.
1. Don’t force happiness on them. Don’t use our own thoughts and perspectives to judge what they should choose. We may want to take them to nice restaurants, travel abroad, or live in a big house, but that may not be what they want.
2. Understand their nature. You must understand that the older they get, the more childlike they may become. Many times they may seem unreasonable or stubborn. Please don’t use logic with them—use love.
3. Listen a lot. They may tell stories from the past over and over. They may not want answers—just someone to listen. Just listen attentively… and don’t act annoyed; that’s enough.
Sending encouragement to all devoted children. We may have some friction as family members, but please remember to always let your heart (with compassion) lead. Don’t rely only on reason.
